Thanks to the generosity of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation (PHSACF), 38 seniors residing at The Village of Hillside in Harbor Springs have benefited from three health and safety initiatives: 14 air conditioning units that will remain in the units into the future, 16 upgraded smoke detectors, and emergency funds for individual residents have enhanced their quality of life. The residents and local emergency responders are very grateful for the assistance provided by the grant from PHSACF, which made this possible. Not only are residents breathing easier, but there is a better chance of successful rescue efforts in the event of a fire. Older adults with hearing loss are much more likely to be alerted to fires when they see flashing lights from fire alarms and can evacuate more quickly. First responders see this as critical for fire rescue efforts.

Not only did the grant from PHSACF fund physical safety improvements, but the grant award allowed allocated funds to support residents at The Village of Hillside during an emergency. The support of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation helped eight older adults during their time of greatest need.

Linda, a resident at The Village of Hillside, is very active. She enjoys participating in community events and regularly goes into the community for activities and medical appointments. However, in 2023, Linda received a new medical diagnosis, meaning she would have more frequent medical appointments, and the appointments would last for multiple hours each. As an older adult on a portable oxygen unit, this posed a problem. Linda desperately needed to attend each appointment, but the battery on her portable oxygen unit would not last through the appointment and travel time. She needed help.

Luckily for Linda, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation was there to save the day. Linda received a new battery for her oxygen machine, with a longer battery life, and can now attend her appointments and visit with friends and loved ones without fear of her oxygen machine failing. Linda has gained a sense of freedom and can get to very-needed medical appointments.

Many seniors who have worked hard and saved their lives can still be financially vulnerable due to advancing age and medical conditions. The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation's support is a lifeline for their later years. Thank you!
